Our congregation, St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, a relatively newly planted church in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington is doing two AdventConspiracy Projects:
(1) We have put up an Angel & Dove Tree: Parishioners give a relational gift and then either (a) chose an angel from the tree and from the list printed on the back of the angel, pick an E.R.D.-M.D.G. project representing the value of what they would have purchased, then write a check to E.R.D. for that amount, or (b) pick a dove and purchase a gift for a needly local family.
(2) We have encouraged parishioners to bring family and/or friends to our Christmas Potluck Social and donate to E.R.D. an amount equivalent to what it would have cost to take them out to dinner.
St. Paul’s Outreach Committee has been “selling” alternative gifts for the last several Advent seasons. That is where my husband and I do our shopping. Our family is really into this kind of giving because we don’t need or want more “stuff.”
